One of my favorite lines to come out of the Olympics, “F around and find out.” While by no means do I compare myself to an Olympian, I believe that pushing yourself to the limit and challenging misconceptions, can lead to something truly beautiful. And also, I think pregnancy and motherhood could be their own Olympic sport but that is my hot take on pregnancy with type 1 diabetes and motherhood.. lol ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, what does it look like for someone who is pregnant while living with type 1 diabetes? In a snapshot, this is what it looked like for me (and is unique to me but all experiences can differ): ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

➡️ Pregnancy considered high-risk
➡️ Frequent visits with my medical team
➡️ Significant changes in my insulin needs
➡️ Baby’s belly trended larger than average
➡️ Induction at 37 weeks ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

✅ It is 100% possible for woman with T1D to have a healthy pregnancy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

✅ Having a supportive medical team especially while pregnant, is incredibly important! If you are not pleased with your medical team, it is your body/your mind, try to find a team that best meets your needs!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅ Everyone’s pregnancy & T1D experiences are unique and not a one size fits all. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

✅ Pregnancy can be mentally and physically exhausting and adding T1D management to that, it could be extremely challenging! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We can pretty much do everything from our smart phones, so why not have the ability to initiate insulin delivery directly from an app?

Well, the time is finally here! Tandem released a limited launch of the new functionality to initiate a bolus directly through the t:connect app. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I hide my pump in my bra, so anytime I am out and have to give myself insulin, I have to awkwardly dig deep into my bra to pull out my pump. Wearing a bodysuit, forget about it! 🤦🏻‍♀️ But now, with this new app functionality, it is a total game changer. I need insulin, no problem! I just pull out my phone and initiate the bolus. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So far, I’d give this feature 👍🏼👍🏼 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Let’s spill the tea on mental health and diabetes! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I created Sweet Embrace as an outlet to share my journey with type 1 diabetes. For the past couple of months, life has been moving faster than I can grasp it and to be honest, the last thing I wanted to do was to post about diabetes and my daily struggles. Sometimes we all just need a little bit of a pause to catch our breath and to really hone in on everything that is happening around us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Diabetes sure as heck can take a toll not only physically but mentally. From the outside looking in, I could be as happy as a clam but from the inside, I am fighting tirelessly to keep my sugars in range. I am tired, I am worn, and I just want for a second not to have to think “What is my blood sugar now?” or “I probably should not have eaten that,” or even the thoughts around “Why is my sugar so high or so low?” It is the constant thoughts that people living with diabetes have to deal with and it is exhausting! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Even having lived almost 12 years with diabetes, it can still be mentally draining and it is normal to have days where it is just not okay. It is so important to acknowledge these feelings and to feel all the feels. Take a walk, punch a pillow, talk it out, or do whatever you need to do to let out that mental stress.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

And remember, you are not alone!! There are so many people, like myself, facing similar struggles and there are tons of amazing resources out there!

On this day each year, I will forever be reminded that while that day may have been one of the worst days of my life, I am also reminded of the strong, brave, resilient woman I became to overcome this obstacle and live the beautiful, lively life I have always envisioned for myself!

Hi, It’s me Kaitlin! - I took some time off from posting bc it’s been a crazy few months getting ready for my upcoming May wedding!

But I wanted to share my recent travel experience! Let’s talk about traveling with diabetes ✈️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⬇️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This past weekend, I was so lucky to have been able to travel to Scottsdale, AZ for my bachelorette party! 👰🏻‍♀️🌵⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Traveling with diabetes triggers many fears and anxiety like:
❔Do I have enough supplies?
❔Will my pump stop working?
❔Do I have enough backup supplies?
❔Do I have enough snacks to treat a low blood sugar?
❔Will I have to get a pat down? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
..and the list goes on! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I have been using the tandem t:slim pump for about 5 years or so and have never had any issues with travel, but recently, the high altitude alarm on my pump kept going off, even prior to my travels! This alarm suspends all insulin deliveries and the pump will not resume until a new cartridge is installed. I contacted Tandem to troubleshoot and to see if I could get a new pump before traveling, but was unable to do so at that time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Unfortunately, my fear came true and my pump stopped working mid-flight as the alarm triggered and all insulin deliveries were suspended! Of course panic ensued 😬I did have backup pens but was not something I wanted to worry about during my bachelorette party!! I finally got the pump to start working before we landed but then it stopped working again as we were driving to the Air Bnb. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I got Tandem on the phone and was able to order a new pump for when I arrived home and by the grace of God, my pump started working again and worked for the entire weekend up until my last hour coming home on the plane! Sugar was high but I was beyond thankful that I was going to the comfort of my own home and would have a new pump waiting for me to use! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While technology is great, there is always the potential for something to just stop working! Prepare for the worst and learn to pivot when things go awry! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Seeing the Dexcom commercial air during the Super Bowl, I couldn’t help but smile. I was happy to see this being aired on primetime TV, even shouting to my friends and showing them “hey, that’s what I have!” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

After reading so many comments and the backlash coming from that commercial, it got me thinking. Yes, this is great that Dexcom is promoting how amazing their device is (and I can attest this device has been lifesaving), but some people can’t even afford insulin let alone this device. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I am happy diabetes is being brought to light but better efforts need to be made to bring more awareness around the daily struggles of diabetes and the real issues at hand here. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Diabetes awareness is much more than an amazing device used by people with diabetes being promoted by a celebrity. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of @nickjonas and @dexcom, but we need to do better in bringing awareness to what really needs attention!!

This is no easy task to take on, so I give all of you a huge thank you! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

For me, I am beyond grateful for my fiancé who loves me unconditionally through all of my highs & lows and the crazy mood swings that come with it and who has literally been a life saver to me more times than once! From grabbing me a juice box when I am low and too weak to leave the couch or when a low hits in the middle of a night, or literally rushing back home from work to wake me up from a very low blood sugar (pre-Covid). **Story for another day**

Day 21: Exercising with the Tandem T:Slim pump! 🚴🏻‍♀️🏋🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The Tandem pump has a ton of cool features including the Control-IQ and Basal-IQ technology that work in conjunction with the Dexcom CGM (*These features adjust insulin delivery levels based on CGM readings). The pump can be set to two modes: Exercise & Sleep. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

With the exercise mode, Control-IQ will use slightly different methods for automatic treatments to account for the likely drop in BG levels that occur during exercise. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

When exercise mode is enabled, the target BG range is automatically set to 140-160 mg/dL (a more narrow and higher range). If a BG level of less than or equal to 140 mg/dL is predicted, Control-IQ will start to decrease basal insulin delivery and if a BG level of less than or equal to 80 is predicted, Control-IQ will stop basal delivery. *Insulin delivery will resume once the BG is back in range. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

For me personally, my BG levels almost always plummet when I do high intensity cardio activities. If I know I am going to workout within the next 2-3 hours, I will set my pump to exercise mode. This doesn’t always work and sometimes I do have to unplug completely from my pump. When in doubt, always have a juice box handy 🧃👌🏼 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I’ll be the first to admit and to shout it from the rooftop that DIABETES SUCKS! ..and I know I am not alone in feeling this way! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

..However, I do believe that from some sucky situations can blossom some really beautiful things. Embracing the suck & shifting a negative mindset can help to better a sucky situation (as that is of diabetes)!

Day 16: Lancet Change Mondays! ..because we all know you’re due for a change😜 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The lancet is the needle used to prick your finger for blood. The recommendation is to change it after every use but let’s be honest, some if not most people may go days, weeks, or even months without changing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I at least try to change it every week (if I remember)! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Day 16: Lancet Change Mondays! ..because we all know you’re due for a change😜 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The lancet is the needle used to prick your finger for blood. The recommendation is to change it after every use but let’s be honest, some if not most people may go days, weeks, or even months without changing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I at least try to change it every week (if I remember)! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Type 1 diabetes is truly an interesting phenomenon. There is no known cause or cure, and a person living with type 1 diabetes is constantly making medical dosing decisions that can be life or death! T1D is invisible to most people looking in from the outside but it is far from invisible to anyone living with T1D!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔹You see me and you see a normal, healthy young female.
🔹 You see me and you would never know the daily battles my own body is fighting against me.

Type 1 diabetes is like having a second full-time job that I never wanted, is 24/7, and doesn’t even offer vacation days! Diabetes burnout is real people!!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are all human and sometimes need a mental health day. It is really important to know that 𝒾𝓉’𝓈 𝑜𝓀𝒶𝓎 𝓃𝑜𝓉 𝓉𝑜 𝒷𝑒 𝑜𝓀𝒶𝓎 some days. The key is to recognizing that you need to take a moment to reset and silent the craziness of life (diabetes included). Whether it be through mediation, working out, going for a walk, reading a book, visiting with family and friends, or simply just laying in bed. Type 1 diabetes not only affects the individual diagnosed but also, the people that love and care for that individual. I am so thankful to have had such a strong backing from the beginning to help get me through the hard days and give me the encouragement and drive to push forward. I am forever grateful for my family, fiancé, and friends ❤️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Day 8: My T1D Hero ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I was first diagnosed, nobody in my family had T1D, so this was foreign and unknown territory for us all. A few years after I was diagnosed, my father unfortunately was diagnosed with T1D. While I never want to see any one I love have to go through what I do, I knew that I would be there for my dad to lean on and we would get through this together. My dad is the strongest man I know with all the things he has had to undergo in his life and while having T1D has not been easy for him, I have witnessed the strength and perseverance to push through! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You do not have to be alone in this battle! There can be some dark, frustrating, and just completely overwhelming days, so I truly hope that everyone can find a support system/someone to lean on, whether it be with family, friends, a partner, or even through the T1D community! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Day 6: Flying High (Literally) ✈️ ..but let’s talk about High Blood Sugars aka Hyperglycemia ↗️⬆️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Hyperglycemia means there is too much sugar in the blood. This is typically when the blood sugar level is above 170 mg/dL. **May vary for each individual** ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Symptoms:
▪️Increased thirst and/or hunger
▪️Frequent urination
▪️Tired
▪️Headache
▪️Dry mouth
▪️Shortness of breath ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Some Things I do to Combat a High:
🔻First things first - check my blood sugar with a finger prick to make sure my CGM is accurate before taking insulin to correct the high.
💦 Drink lots of water!!
🚴🏻‍♀️Hop on the peloton bike or take a walk around the block (or apartment more so lately) to get my body moving! - Movement/exercise helps to bring my blood sugar levels down!
🧘🏻 Do some mediation to help calm any stress/nerves I may have that could have caused a high.
✔️Monitor blood sugar levels/test frequently ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Day 5: Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycemia) ↘️⬇️ Not enough sugar in the blood. This is typically when the blood sugar level is less than 70 mg/dL. **May vary for each individual** ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Symptoms:
▪️Feeling weak/lightheaded/shaky
▪️Sweating
▪️Fast heartbeat
▪️Blurred vision
▪️Confusion

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes about 3 months before I was set to go off to Penn State University (a 4 hour drive away from home) and cheer on my Nittany Lions! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

During these times where work has become 100% remote, I wanted to take a second to share an appreciation post. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I will always have the utmost respect for the place that I work. Not only is this the place where I met my fiancé but this place has allowed me to continue my job effortlessly from the comfort of my own home. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Being a T1D, I feared that I would have to get back on public transportation to get to work everyday. I feared that I would be in close quarters with people that who knows where they have been or if they are concerned about the well being of themself or for others. Thankfully, my fears were subdued by our company allowing us to work from home most likely until 2021. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

No insulin pumps or Dexcoms were harmed in my attempt to do this (my pump has occasionally slipped out of my sports bra when doing this..and yes I do tend to randomly go into handstands from time to time😆)! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
